MGR was a member of the Congress Party till 1953.MGR joined the DMK.He became a vocal Tamil and Dravidian nationalist and prominent member of the DMK (Dravidian Progressive Federation) .He added glamour to the
Dravidian movement which was sweeping Tamil Nadu. He became a member of the state Legislative Council in 1962.
He was first elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly in 1967. After the death of his mentor, Annadurai, MGR
became the treasurer of DMK in 1969 and Karunanidhi became the chief minister.

SOCIAL WORK AND CHARITY:

MGR's best known program was the free mid-day meal scheme for poor children. Dismissed as a populist program by
academics, the media and middle class, the program ensured for hundreds of thousands of children poor children the
only hearty meal of the day. MGR was always the first to personally offer relief in catastrophes and calamities like fire,
flood, drought, and cyclones. His offer of rain coats to the Rickshaw pullers ( a mode of transport those days) made
headlines and brought him closer to the poor. He was the first donor during the war with China in 1962, donating Rs.
75,000 to the war fund. He was the founder and editor of THAI weekly magazine and ANNA daily newspaper in Tamil.
MGR was the owner of Sathya Studios and Emgeeyar Pictures which produced many of the films he acted in. He also
founded the MGR Schools in Kodambakkam giving free education and food for the film workers children in 1953. He was the president of Nadigar Sangam - South India Film Artists Association for four terms. He gave all his property for the welfare of the poor and hearing impaired people of TamilNadu.
Ofttimes he was compared with the mythical king Karna whose palms became red by giving alms to the needy.

After MGR’s sudden death, the party was divided with one group under his wife and another with his hewin. But this group fight was between MGR’S one time Manager R.M.Veerappan and the MGR’S Heroin actress, with MGR’s two leave symbol frozen by Election Commissions. The defeat of both factions and DMK’s re-emergence made them once again think and unit. The frozen symbol was restored to the united AIADMK and AIADMK reemerged victorions setting massive majority leaving DMK with one seat for its party present. J.
